We have a staff of more than 35 specially trained individuals, each playing an important role in your care. All of our ophthalmologists are certified by the American board of Ophthalmology, earned a medical degree, completed a residency in ophthalmology, and then went on to complete subspecialty training in the diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases.
C. Patrick Carroll, M.D.
Dr. Carroll, a Dayton native, earned his medical degree from The Ohio State University and also completed his residency in the department of ophthalmology at OSU. He went on to complete a fellowship in retina and vitreous surgery through the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Dr. Carroll served as Chief of Ophthalmology at the Dayton Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center for over 30 years.
Dr. Carroll is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. He has published several articles in professional journals and has delivered lectures on various topics in ophthalmology.
In 1980, Dr. Carroll founded Retina Physicians & Surgeons, Inc.
Dr. Carroll and his wife Pam, live in the Dayton area and are very active in several Miami Valley organizations.
A. Marie Martinek, M.D.
Dr. Martinek earned her medical degree from the University of Michigan. She completed her ophthalmology residency and retina-vitreous fellowship at the Kresge Eye Institute/Wayne State University, Michigan.
Dr. Martinek is a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and serves as an assistant clinical professor at The Ohio State University. She speaks professionally to local and national organizations.
Dr. Martinek lives in the Greater Dayton area with her husband, a radiologist in the Dayton area, and has four children.
In 1996, Dr. Martinek joined Retina Physicians & Surgeons.
Bruce M. Buerk, M.D.
Dr. Buerk, a native of Oxford, Ohio, earned a medical degree from The Ohio State University. He completed a residency in ophthalmology at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary in Chicago, Illinois where he was selected Chief Resident in his final year. He then completed a vitreo-retinal fellowship at the Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Dr. Buerk has been a co-author of several peer-reviewed journals in various topics of ophthalmology and presented posters at national meetings such as the Retina Society and the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology.
He is married to Dr. Radha Reddy, a Dayton native, who is a board-certified OB/GYN.
In 2004, Dr. Buerk joined Retina Physicians & Surgeons.
Scott D. Schoenberger, M.D.
Dr. Schoenberger, a Columbus native, earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati, where he was named to the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Cincinnati and completed a vitreo-retinal fellowship at Vanderbilt University where he received the J. Donald Gass, M.D., Endowed Fellowship.
Dr. Schoenberger has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles in ophthalmic and medical journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists.
Dr. Schoenberger is married to Dr. Arshia Ali, an internist who practices medicine in Cincinnati.
In 2013, Dr. Schoenberger joined Retina Physicians & Surgeons.
Martin F. Wilkes, M.D.
Dr. Wilkes was born in Boston, Massachusetts but raised in Atlanta, Georgia. His undergraduate education was at Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia where he received a degree in Molecular Biology and graduated with honors in 2003. He went to medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University school of medicine, graduating in 2007.
His preliminary medicine internship was at Virginia Commonwealth University Health System where he was a recipient of the Arnold Gold Award for Humanism and Teaching in Medicine. He completed an Ophthalmology Residency at the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of Ophthalmology, serving as Chief Resident in his final year. Additional subspecialty training in medical and surgical disease of the retina was undertaken at the Cincinnati Eye Institute associated with University of Cincinnati Department of Ophthalmology.
Dr. Wilkes is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists. He has been practicing in Atlanta for the past several years before relocating to Dayton.
In 2018, Dr. Wilkes joined Retina Physicians & Surgeons.
